Online Tutorials:
Why the tutorials?

It seems folks are always struggling or intimidated with
certain computer functions. I will use this page to answer some of the most
frequently asked questions. If something is not clear or you wish to know more
please use the contact form and send me a message. If you find this helpful or
have any suggestions for future tutorials let me know that as well. Please note
that you will need the
Macromedia Flash
player to view the videos. If you don't already have the player (You most likely do) you should be prompted to install it so keep an eye on your
pop-up blocker.
Zip Files

This is probably the number one headache for non savvy computer users. Windows XP has an
unzipping function built in. Its quite basic. I recommend downloading one of the
following. Powerarchiver, Winrar or
WinZip. I personally use Powerarchiver and
Winrar. Powerarchiver is very fast but Winrar handles corrupt archives better.
Please note that the programs may use different menu titles but the correct
choice should be apparent. Keep in mind if you are running a demo version of the
software you may have to agree to something in the middle of the process.
Unzipping Files

Im going to show you a method for extracting zip files that will create a folder in the same location and with the same name as your zipped file. If your zip file is in an email save it to your desktop before proceeding. Notice the file paths in the video to help you understand what Im explaining.
-
Right click the zip file.
-
Select the option "Extract to
c:\Doc..\user...\Desktop\your-zip-filename.zip" In the example its telling you that I'm extracting a zip file that's in a folder on my Desktop. Don't let the stuff at the beginning of the extract path scare you. You are only concerned the the location and file name part at the end. It usually the longest menu item.

Zipping Files

This is very similar to unzipping as described above. If you want to zip more then one file place all your files to be zippedl in a new folder with the name of your choice before proceding.
-
Right click the file or folder to be zipped
-
Select the "Compress to" option with the name of your file or folder. This will give you a zipped file of the same name and location as your original.
